The best of these are Right versus Privilege, The Open-Admissions Experiment at the City University of New York (The Free Press, 1981, New York) by David Lavin, Richard D. Alba, and Richard Silberstein and Changing the Odds, Open Admissions and the Life Chances of the Disadvantaged (Yale University Press, 1996, New Haven CT) by David Lavin and David Hyllegard; Also useful are Open Admissions at City University of New York: An Analysis of the First Year (Prentice-Hall, 1975, Englewood Cliffs NJ) by Jack Rossman, Helen Astin, Alexander Astin and Elaine El-Khawas and, The Privileged Many: A Study of the City Universitys Open Admissions Policy, 1970-1975 (New York, 1975) by the Womens City Club of New York. James Traubs City on a Hill, Testing the American Dream at City College (Addison-Wesley, 1994, New York) received considerable attention when it was published because it provided ammunition for opponents of Open Admissions. It doesnt so much attempt to refute the rigorous scholarship of Lavin et. al. as much as it provides a wealth of anecdotal support for popular prejudices.
